Ten

Stanley Tombs leaned over Shamina watching each move she made with a practised eye. A delicate waft of perfume reached his nose and the long dark hair softly brushed his cheek. He felt so attracted to this woman that he could hardly keep his feelings under control. Dare he make a move? This was not the usual way he worked. In this case he had to weigh up whether it was worth getting involved with someone in a wheel chair, whose disability could change his own life. Then of course there was the boy. To tell the truth children had never particularly appealed to him.

He stood up straight, relinquishing his grip on the back of her chair. “I don’t think there is much more I can teach you, and to tell the truth I have a long list of customers waiting for my services.”

Shamina did not answer until she had closed the computer right down, and then she turned to face him. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all your help. I would never have conquered it all on my own.”

“Think nothing of it; you have been a marvellous pupil. I never thought that you would get on so well. If I might say so, it has been a real pleasure.”

Her brown eyes sparkled with an inner happiness that personally made Stanley feel good. Shamina answered, “Next week I’m going to get Mum to put an advert in the local paper for secretarial work. I can type quite fast now and it would be lovely to be independent. If I could earn a little money we could all go away on holiday. Mum would enjoy that. I can’t remember when she had her last one.”

Stanley admired her determination; this lady had guts, no doubt about that. “I’ll put the word round to all my business contacts, they are sure to respond positively.”

“Thanks, you are so considerate.”

“Perhaps there is something you could do for me in return,” Stanley said, taking his courage firmly in both hands. “How about you come out to dinner with me, next Saturday night? I’ll come and pick you up and bring you home, so you have no worries on that score.”

Shamina suddenly became aware of Bones standing in the doorway watching them with that look on his face, which told her he had overheard their conversation. Clearly he was not amused, as her eyes met his across the room he flushed with anger.

“Thank you, I’d like that very much, Stanley,” she answered quietly, knowing she was the centre of the two men’s attention.

“Right, I’ll call for you around eight then, see you.”

Bones gave Stanley a dirty look as he brushed by him. “Am I interrupting anything?” he said loudly, looking disdainful.

“Nothing special, as it was my last lesson today, Stanley has asked me out to dinner. It will make a nice change,” Shamina lightly answered.

“Why didn’t you tell me you wanted to go out? I’d have been only too pleased to oblige,” Bones replied, choking back the hurt.
